Raine Maida’s young solo career hasn’t ridden the coattails of his long-time meal ticket, so even though his second full-length release is an uneven blend of beatnik chic and atmospheric folk (and a pair of out-of-place pop songs for good measure), We All Get Lighter is vastly different from his work with Our Lady Peace and as such provides an interesting window into the singer you thought you knew.

There are fewer spoken word passages on We All Get Lighter compared to 2007’s The Hunter’s Lullaby, but all the stark vitality of that initial foray remains here in the form of electronic drum loops and simple acoustic guitar strumming. In recent times, Maida and his wife, Chantal Kreviazuk, have been collaborating on film scoring, which explains the use of sweeping strings and delicate backing vocals (provided by Kreviazuk). We All Get Lighter is disjointed despite its short length, but there are a few sweet spots when Maida peels back as many layers as possible.
