他是后达达主义乐派frank zappa的主奏吉他手，他是名吉他手joe satriani的爱徒，他加入过重摇滚whitesnake和david lee roth等乐队……他就是steve vai！1960年出生于纽约长岛的吉他英雄steve vai自13岁起便以吉他手的身份自组乐团，并受到恩师joe satriani的提携与指导。由于天赋异禀，加上后来他至著名的柏克莱音乐学院学习爵士乐和古典乐，使得当时年纪轻轻的他就拥有令人惊叹的高超技巧。早在steve18岁时就受早期的前卫摇滚大师frink zappa赏识，成为该团的吉他手。 1985年接替yngwie malmsteen成为alcatrazz乐团之吉他手。1986年又为前van halen主唱david lee roth担任吉他手、1989年加入whitesnake协助完成《slip of the tongue》专辑……种种音乐历程，让他在自已个人专辑中常展现各种不同的音乐类型。虽然在steve vai的个人专辑中多以硬式摇滚、重金属曲风为主，但仔细聆听，会发现其中多包含爵士、放克、古典等多种感觉与味道。而除了音乐性外，steve在吉他技术上更可奉为当代吉他手的规臬与典范。由日本《young guitar》杂志每年的吉他手票选，前三名中必有一名为steve vai。弹奏技巧上无论"速弹"、"点弦"、至"都已达到如火纯青的地步。特殊的"抖音"技巧与独出一格的吉他音色更突显他的个人风格。在他的个人专辑中，几乎每张的风格都不太一样。有些专辑中收录的歌曲，是属于比较实验性的作品，初次接受可能有人会不太习惯。但由此证明steve vai是个勇于创新的人，不断向新的曲风、尝试迈进.
曾获得包括葛莱美等无数奖项，神乎其技、极富创意的Steve Vai，是当今世界上摇滚吉他的第一把交椅。 Steve Vai是Frank Zappa的铁杆乐迷。他曾以实力证明自己能够演奏Zappa绝大多数的作品，并且有过耳不忘之功，从而加入Zappa乐队的机会。Zappa对Steve Vai在专辑Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch中表现的评价为："令人瞠目的吉他手"。
大约13岁时，Led Zeppelin 在纽约麦迪逊广场的演唱会是促使他学习吉他的催化剂，Jimmy Page在 'Heartbreaker'(Led Zeppelin 专辑)的solo抓住他的心，他回忆道：“我在那之前从未听过那么快的弹奏，以今天的标准或许不是伟大的solo，但在当时对我是极具意义的”。
Vai 14岁师承吉他英雄Joe Satriani，Satriani赞叹的说：“Steve Vai是我最初的学生之一，当时他还是个彻底的初学者，一手拿着没有弦的吉他，另一手拿着一包弦的那种人。然而到了最后教他的日子里，他弹了我不曾弹的，他已弹得和我一样快了，当时我痛恨所谓的速弹。Steve也和我钻研摇杆、点弦，他已经成为一个有能力的弹奏家，但让我更惊讶的是，他已是一个特殊的音乐家！” 另一个对Steve Vai有着无形影响的是Jimi Hendrix，Vai说：“我想Jimi Hendrix最主要给我的是精神上的影响，他的表演方式激励了我，他完全凭本能弹奏没有copy任何范例，你没有听过他弹得像任何人，大多数的吉他手你能听出其影响来自谁，但Jimi Hendrix好像从金星或某处跑来令你捉摸不定”。
Steve Vai后来在波士顿柏克莱音乐学院念书，这段期间Vai被训练成很强的视谱者，他练习一切从图书馆可得到的谱，他觉得这样辛苦训练是值得的。而更大的苦工是在他负责誊写Frank Zappa的曲子，后来他也加入Frank Zappa，也在那儿录了生平第一张专辑。Vai回忆道：“当时我一天工作10个小时完全在翻写乐谱，有吉他solo、主奏部份、管弦乐部份，我家堆4尺高的谱，我已经能在心中听到音乐或形成在吉他上的把位，现在我一看到谱就能相当清楚音乐的性质及听起来如何，我如果想到一串旋律，我能马上写出来，就像写信一样”。
1984年Vai加入Alcatrazz取代离团的Yngwie Malmsteen，自此Steve Vai开始5年的吉普赛式职业打手的生涯，这其中还包括了David Lee Roth's Band、Whitesnake。这期间Steve Vai也参与电影 'Crossroads'的客串演出，Vai饰演带有邪恶气息的吉他手，最后与男主角（小子难缠男主角饰演）决斗输了，当然这只是戏剧效果。直到1990年发行 'Passion and Warfare'专辑，Steve Vai正式开始属于自己的吉他音乐事业。
听过Steve Vai所有专辑的人一定会发现到，每一张专辑的第七首曲子都是抒情曲，'Passion and Warfare'专辑封面也出现7的字样，这是他的幸运数字。基本上，Vai的每一张专辑都非常值得推荐，也很容易在唱片行买到，入门者可先买SONY最近发行的'史帝夫范 / 无限延伸-终极精选'双CD，顾名思义里头全是他最脍炙人口的作品，如'For the love of God'和 'Tender Surrender'等佳作都在其中，相信就算不弹吉他的乐迷也会被他富有情感的优美旋律所深深折服。
