他的演奏无懈可击，技巧完美，让人们想到了波里尼(1960年肖邦钢琴比赛的获奖者)，正是波里尼的演奏当年让鲁宾斯坦如此感言道．“从技巧层面上来说，他比我们在座的都要好。”当我听李云迪那令人生畏的技巧表现时，鲁宾斯坦这句话就回响在我的耳畔，因为李云迪指下的几乎每一个音符都做到了钻石般的完美。不信的话可以听听他弹的李斯特协奏曲的开始部分，或者肖邦协奏曲的尾声：光辉灿烂，咄咄逼人。没错，有的时候李云迪的弹性速度的确显得有些见棱见角，过于冷静(完全不像有着王者风范的鲁宾斯坦那样充满音乐性地呼吸)．比如肖邦协奏曲第一乐章的10分45秒处，但是他确确实实准确地控制着乐曲的每一步发展。也许我们能够找到更为虚张声势、控制更为准确的李斯特协奏曲；抑或某位年长的钢琴家演奏的更加彬彬有礼。更加和蔼可亲的肖邦，但他们都不能像李云迪那样，在外形上起到引领潮流的作用：这位身着华丽的男模服装的年轻艺术家的照片经常出现在DG公司各式各样华美的封面上。同时，他也经常与各种名流合作演出，其录音事业也正在蓬勃发展。

Yundi Li plays the repertoire for which he is so highly acclaimed – Chopin and Liszt – with recordings of the two most popular works from Romantic concerto repertoire. The message is simple: highly emotional, popular music played by a young master.
In October 2000, Yundi Li won First Prize at the famous Chopin Competition in Warsaw – the first time in 15 years that the top prize had been awarded. Since then, the Chinese pianist has won high praise for his Chopin playing in particular, whether for his 2002 DG recording debut (a Chopin recital) or for his live performances:
